When facing long or complex productions, sometimes it's hard to keep track of all the developments happening across the teams. Between work monitoring, team management, schedules, shot approvals (or disapprovals), and all other informations needed to get a full comprehension of what is happening, done, or still to do, things can get a bit messy.
To help with that, we decided to try and find a tool that compiled all of this information in a intuitive and direct manner, that is customizable and accessible across all production and, if possible, open source. And we came across RAMSES.
Developed by RxLaboratory, 'an organization dedicated to the development and promotion of free software', RAMSES arose as the answer to our needs. It's made of several components, such as a schedule for production planning and estimation, a shots table for production tracking and a pipeline editor that is possible to automate using the Ramses Add-ons. It also allows connection to a server, creating a direct link between the Ramses Client Application and the user's files and folders.
We started by building our pipeline. It is completely customizable, so we could create and add any step that suited our production.
Ramses automatically translated the production steps into the shots table, where we could add all the sequences and shots that we wished to track.
Once that was done, we were able to set the status, difficulty, due date and priority of each shot, as well as assign them to team members. It was also possible to sort the shots and steps while considering status, tags and assigned users for clearer understanding of the work flow.
RxLab has a full explanatory manual, starting from a quick start guide, that explains all there is to know about RAMSES, its functions, installation, add-ons and so on. You can access it here.
